Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on the 24th day of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theater. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her life, but spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of an elementary school student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the trash belonging to one of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist at a small production studio right after she graduated from school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
